Kyte Powertech Develops New Mobile Transformer Solution

R&S Group expands portfolio with new mobile transformer solution

R&S Group has completed development of a new mobile transformer solution, adding a specialised capability to its portfolio for utilities, renewable energy, industrial infrastructure and emergency power applications.

Developed by Kyte Powertech in collaboration with R&S Group R&D, the project integrates transformer engineering, manufacturing expertise and advanced monitoring into a transportable solution that provides temporary or emergency capacity when continuity of supply is critical.

The mobile transformer can support a range of applications, including planned substation maintenance and upgrades, emergency response to equipment failure or network disruption, temporary grid reinforcement, renewable energy projects and critical infrastructure. It can also provide temporary power while permanent assets are being repaired, replaced or manufactured.

Its containerised design integrates the transformer with switching and connection equipment, cooling, protection and monitoring systems, reducing installation complexity and enabling efficient mobilisation. Multiple primary and secondary voltage options also allow the unit to accommodate a range of medium- and low-voltage network requirements.

Data-led engineering and monitoring

Advanced condition monitoring is central to the development. Embedded fibre-optic sensors measure winding temperatures at critical points, while the monitoring system captures operational data such as voltage, current, load, harmonics, power quality, cooling-system status and hydrogen levels.

This data enables actual operating behaviour to be compared with calculated thermal models, supporting further validation and optimisation of transformer performance.

The unit also uses Bio 300X insulating fluid, whose low viscosity supports heat dissipation and thermal performance. Operating data will help Kyte Powertech and R&S Group R&D continue to assess areas such as winding arrangements, oil-flow paths and cooling-system capacity, with the aim of supporting efficient use of materials while maintaining the required performance and reliability.

From Group expertise to new capability

The project demonstrates how engineering and manufacturing capabilities across R&S Group can be combined to develop solutions for changing customer and network requirements.

Kyte Powertech brings extensive experience in designing and manufacturing distribution transformers, supported by R&S Group R&D expertise and the wider technical capabilities across the Group.

As electricity networks evolve, utilities and infrastructure operators are increasingly required to manage maintenance, upgrades, additional capacity needs and unexpected disruptions while maintaining continuity of supply. Mobile transformer capacity offers a flexible option for meeting these requirements alongside long-term investment in permanent network infrastructure.

The completed development broadens R&S Group’s transformer portfolio and strengthens its ability to support customers across grid, renewable energy and critical infrastructure applications.
